Himahal Pradesh was originally a group of many small princely hill states under British India.
These states had similar culture, geography, and traditions, which made it easy to unify them later.


2️⃣ Steps in Formation of Himchal Pradesh

📌15 April 1948 - The Beginning

  • 31 small hill princely states were merged.
  • Formed "Chief Commissioner's Province of Himachal Pradesh."
  • This date is celebrated as Himachal Day.

📌1950 - Became Part-C State

  • The Constitution of India came into effect on 26 January 1950.
  • Himachal became a Part-C State, administrated by a Lieutenant Governor.

📌1 November 1956 - Became Union Territory

  • Under States Reorganisation Act 1956, Part-C states were abolished.
  • Himachal was made a Union Territory

📌1 November 1966 - Major Expansion

After Punjab Reorganisation (1966), many areas were added to Himachal:

  • Kangra
  • Kullu
  • Lahul-Spiti
  • Shimla
  • Kinnaur
  • Parts of Una

This made Himachal geographically larger and more balanced.

📌25 January 1971 - Statehood Achieved

  • Himachal became the 18th state of India.
  • This day is celebrated as Statehood Day every year.
